MILK STRIKE

Compulsory Conference Today PA AUCKLAND, Dec. 7. An effort to settle the milk strike will be made in Auckland tomorrow. A compulsory conference of representatives of the Dairy Workers’ Union and the employers will be held at 2.15 in the afternoon under the chairmanship of Mr H. L. Bockett, the Director of Employment. Mr Bockett arrived in Auckland by car late tonight. r Although the dispute has spread to other centres, it is hoped that a Do-minion-wide settlement will be made at the meeting. It is felt that any agreement here will be accepted by the other branches of the union. There will be little change in the milk position in Auckland tomorrow morning. Two emergency milk trucks will tour the more isolated areas in the suburbs which are not served by dairies. Distribution has become more efficient with private milk vendors helping to deliver the milk. Raw milk is still being delivered in the outer suburbs and on the North Shore some cases of dairies overcharging for milk have been reported. “There has been no authorised increase,’’ said a Milk Board representative yesterday. A full meeting of the Auckland branch of the union has been called for tomorrow morning. The meeting will elect its delegates to the compulsory conference and will be asked to decide the stand to be taken by the delegates.
