HIGH WINDS
Bluff’s Experience WORK STOPPED ON WATERFRONT PA INVERCARGILL, Dec. 7. Because of high winds, no work has been done on the Bluff waterfront since 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon. The gangs returned to work this morning but were dismissed and ordered back for tomorrow morning at 8 o’clock. As a result of the stoppage no work has been done on the four ships at present in port. A severe wind, estimated to have reached 60 or 70 miles an hour, swept Invercargill and other towns in Southland last night for about nine hours—from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. The wind blew with a fury that had not been experienced for many years, but shortly afterwards rain began to fall and the wind fell away to a fresh breeze. The wind again rose sharply this morning, though it did not reach gale force. Little damage was caused. Stewart Island was swept by a severe gale yesterday afternoon, occasional gusts reaching up to 70 and 80 miles an hour. Although the gale was brief, some damage was done. One Chimney was blown down and one fishing vessel was driven from its moorings.
