EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

FROM THE FILES OF THE ©taflo S)ails crimes DUNEDIN, DECEMBER 8. 1865. The prospectus of the Waipori Copper Mining Company is advertised in today’s Daily Times. The capital of the company is £12,000, in 1200 shares of £lO each. The object of the company is to work a copper lode lately discovered on the Redar Creek, in the district of Waipori. An obligation to grant a lease of 80 acres has been given by the Government, which will afford a sufficient area for .extensive workings. In order to meet the requirements of the increasing trade between the various ports north and south of Dunedin, and to form a regular line of communication between Dunedin, Molyneux, Invercargill and Riverton in the south, and Oamaru, Timaru and Lyttelton in the north, a company has been formed in Dunedin called the Southern Steam Navigation Company, Ltd., with a capital of £15,000, in 300 shares of £SO each. It is proposed to have two first-class screw steamers built, one of 150 and one of 250 tons, the larger one for the northern trade and the smaller one for the southern trade. The discovery of gold in the Waitaki district, and not far from Timaru, is reported as follows in the Timaru Herald: - ‘A discovery, which may prove to be of the utmost importance to the district, was made last week by a man named Doherty, at present emEloyed by the Waitaki Ferry. Doherty as been prospecting in country which he believed, from its appearance, to be auriferous. He has sunk several holes, and has succeeded in finding “ colour ” in sufficient quantity to be distinctly encouraging. The exact locality of the find is said to be not more than 20 miles from Timaru in a south-westerly direction. For rings, watches and Jewellery, try Peter Dick, Jewellers, 59 Princes street, Dunedin.—Acfvt.
