RISE OF 4 PER CENT.

Dominion’s Dairy Cow Population Special Correspondent WELLINGTON, Dec. 7. The New Zealand dairy cow population is estimated to have increased by about 4 per cent, in 1950 from 1949. The total cow population is now put at 1,820,000 compared with 1,747,000 last season. These figures are quoted by the New Zealand Dairy Board in a review of production trends. They are an interim indication of the country’s total dairy herd pending publication of the official Government census. The board estimates the production "at pail’’ for the 1949-50 season at 2561 b a cow, compared with 2591 b a cow, which was the revised figure for 1948- The effective average production a cow showed a higher figure for 1949- than for 1948-49 in most districts, but the Dominion average was lower by about 21b a cow because of a sharp reduction in the figure for North Auckland. Effective average production for the various districts for 1949-50 is given as:—North Auckland, 1991 b; Auckland, 2321 b; Gisborne, 2151 b; Hawke’s Bay, 2391 b; Taranaki, 2671 b; Wellington, 2501 b. The South Island average was 2281 b and for the Dominion as a whole 230.31 b
