The Dunedin Bowling Centre’s usual Christmas Pairs Tournament will be played this year commencing on Boxing Day, Tuesday, December 26, with post-section play on Wednesday, December 27. Already the tournament has attracted several entries from outside competitors and is bound to be well supported by the local clubs as a number of bowlers will be remaining in Dunedin until they depart for the Christchurch Centennial Tournament which begins on January 8. Entries for the Christmas Pairs Tournament close next Monday, and the draw will be issued probably at the end of next week. The Almanack The Cricket Almanack of New Zealand has quickly established its reputation as an invaluable companion for every player and lover of the summer game. The 1950 edition is crammed with interesting and authoritative information—general, biographical and statistical. Its editors, A. H. Carman and N. S. MacDonald, have a keen appreciation of what is required by cricketers in this country, and devote ample space to Brabin Shield and unofficial games in addition to giving comprehensive reports of all first class games. The editors select as their cricketers of the year V. J. Scott (batsman), and G. F. Cress well (bowler). Both players have earned these distinctions through sheer merit, and it is gratifyiing to see a minor association player obtaining a thoroughly deserved distinction, even though in tnis province there are still heartburnings that Guy Overton, Southland’s great-hearted bowler, was not given the opportunity to compete with Cresswell on a Carisbrook wicket for the honour. The principal feature of this edition is, of course, the review of the Australian cricket team’s tour of New Zealand last season. The scoreboard of each game is given in addition to a brief but adequate report of the. match. Altogether the Almanack is a complete and satisfying summary of what was a notable season for New Zealand cricket. The Almanack is published by Sporting Publishers and is priced at 7s 6d. Hurdler’s Capabilities W. Muirhead, the Otago 120 Yards Hurdles champion, made his first appearance at the Caledonian Ground last Saturday and won the open hurdle event. Muirhead also holds the Otago University title and has been placed three times in the New Zealand championship event. He is a good sprint hurdler, and if he started training and racing a little earlier in the season instead of concentrating on the New Zealand University , tournament, he would be still capable of winning a national title.
