NAVAL RATING DROWNED

PA AUCKLAND, Dec. 7. A naval rating was drowned at HMNZS Tamaki, the naval training station on Motuine Island, on Wednesday night. He was Royce Patrick Flynn, aged 24, a stoker mechanic, from Ikamatua, near Greymouth. Stoker Mechanic Flynn was a watchkeeper on a Fairmile launch moored off the island. He was last seen alive when he left the shore at 7.50 p.m. in the launch’s dinghy, after having had supper. The lights in the Fairmile were on. This morning it was discovered that the lights were still burning and that Flynn and the dinghy were missing. A search was made, and the dinghy was found in the Tamaki Strait by the scow Vesper. The body was found on a beach on Waiheke Island late this afternoon.
