CLERICAL WORKERS UNION
Sir,—Like your correspondent. "NO Compulsion.” I am also, by compulsion, a member of the Otago Clerical Workers’ Union, and as I consider that the replies given by Mr Still to “ No Compulsion’s ” queries are unsatisfactory, perhaps I could give what I consider to be th® correct answers. 1. All the members of the new executive were elected unopposed, and therefore no ballot of any kind was necessary. 2. Mr Still’s right to continue to occupy his present position as secretary wa® challenged by myself at the annual meeting on the grounds that he is not eligible to do so under the rules of the union. As I consider the ruling which was given by the president on this point to bo unsatisfactory, it is my intention to test this question along with a number of others to which I was unable to obtain satisfactory answers at the annual meeting.
3. Th# membership of the union waf 1382 on May 31. 1950, and the annual meeting was attended by only 14 members.
Past executives of the union appear t® have shown a surprising disregard for tho rights of the members, and as a member of the new executive I would like to assure "No Compulsion ” that I will do everything in my power to see that thes® rights are safeguarded in the future.— I am. etc.. J. V. Gilchrist.
