SPRINTS TO AUSTRALIA

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S EVENTS From the Sports Editor AUCKLAND, Feb. 5. In the two athletic sprints, the 100 Yards and Women’s 100 Yards, Australia almost scooped the pool. In the open division J. Treloar and W. de Gruchy were first and second, with the Canadian, D. A. Pettie, in third place. In the Women’s 100 Australia filled all three places. John Treloar, who has become bigger and stronger than when he was in New Zealand three years ago, put up three sterling races to run 9.7 sec in the heat, 9.6 sec in the semi-final, and 9.7 sec in the final. Much had been heard of the fine performances of Marjorie Jackson, who had twice beaten the Olympic champion, Fanny Blankers-Koen in Australia, and yesterday she proved that her form hail not been over-rated. In the first heat. Miss Jackson was two yards in front at the end of the

first 50 yards. She went through the tape with yards to spare from S. Hardman. New Zealand, and A. Shanley, of Australia. The decisive nature of the win may be taken from the time registered. Miss Jackson did lO.Ssec and Misses Hardman and Shanley 11.2 sec. Miss Jackson equalled the world record made by Mrs Blankers-Koen in 1944.
