New Zealand Women Tennis Players

NSW CHAMPIONSHIPS Rec. 11 p.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 24. i The New Zealand juniors. Misses J. Burke and E. Becroft, reached two finals of the events in the New South Wales lawn tennis championships today Misses Burke and Becroft exhibited splendid courtcraft and understanding in the semi-final of the Girls’ Doubles when they eliminated the favourites, the Victorians, Misses Pam Southcombe and Carmel Borelli. Misses Southcombe and Borelli, rated as Australia’s best junior pair, recently won the Australian hard-court Doubles title. Earlier, Miss Burke surprised by eliminating Miss Moira Bleazard in the semi-final of the Women’s Plate, winning with the loss, of only three games. , Negotiations are proceeding for a visit of the Australian players, McGregor and Worthington, to the New Zealand championships. The LTAA has stated that it is unable to sanction the visit because of a heavy Australian season but further negotiations may yield a result providing they are able to return in time for the Australian championships on January 20. New Zealand is also hopeful of arranging a visit to New Zealand by the Czech champion, J. Drojpny. Results:— _ Girls’ Singles.—Semi-final: Miss B. Penrose beat Miss Becroft (NZ) 6—o. 7—5 Girls’ Doubles. —Semi-final: Misses Becroft and Burke (NZ) beat Misses Southcombe and Borelli 5—7, B—6.8 —6. Mixed Doubles.—Quarter-finals: J. Bromwich and Miss Fitch beat McGregor and Miss E. Attwood (NZ) 6 3. 6 —2; Hopman and Mrs Hopman beat' Felan and Migs Potter (NZ) 6—2. 6 ' Men's Singles In the semi-final of the New South Wales Men’s Singles, Bromwich defeated the national champion, W. Sedgman, 6—4. 4—5, 6—2, 6—4. Bromwich's guile and concentration earned him victory. In the quarter-final. Worthington defeated Jaroslav Drobny 6—3, 6—4, 75_ in his first important match since returning from his world tour, His form showed that he is the most improved of the younger players. Worthington will meet Sidwell in the other semi-final to-morrow.
