BARRIER TO AGGRESSION
Mr Louis A. Johnson, who, at his swearing-in to-day as Secretary of Defence, declared that America wanted peace if it was humanly possible with honour and freedom, but “if there is aggression, we are calmly confident that we can stop it.” He succeeded Mr James Forrestal, who has retired. Mr Johnson gave a pledge that the army, navy and air force would “ unite as one to stop aggression and back up the nation’s foreign policy.” President Truman said that the United States was faced with great problems in both the eastern and western hemisphere, and it was trying its best to meet them. He said that times were serious and Mr Johnson was faced with a tremendous task.
