DUNEDIN BOWLING CENTRE

AUSTRALIAN PARTY’S VISIT

At the monthly meeting of the Dunedin Bowling Centre on Saturday the president. Mr R. L. Fairmaid. occupied the chair.

Advice was received that. an official touring party of Australian bowlers numbering 32 and accompanied by 12 ladies would be visiting New Zealand early in the New Year, and would probably reach Dunedin on February 1 and leave on February 3. A sub-committee was set up to arrange for suitable entertainment. Arising out of the consideration of a number of matters to be dealt with at the half-yearly meeting in January of the New Zealand Bowling Association, a long discussion took place on the new sawdust greens. The International Bowling Board advised that affiliation to the New Zealand Bowling Association of clubs with sawdust greens would not prejudice New Zealand’s membership of the International Board. Several applications for affiliation of sawdust greens had been held over by the New Zealand Bowling Council, and it was resolved by the Dunedin executive that the centre was not opposed to the admission of clubs with sawdust greens, and the Dunedin delegates were instructed to vote accordingly.

The Visits Committee reported that official mid-week visits had been already paid to Taieri and Brighton Glubs, and more would follow in the New Year. It was also decided to invite the Central Otago Centre to send a visiting team to Dunedin during the holidays. The annual match against Canterbury was set down for March 3 or March 10. An invitation from the Bowling Umpires’ Association to play a match against the centre delegates on the St. _ Clair green was accepted for the morning of the first Saturday in February. Proposed pocket badges submitted by the Caversham and North-East Valley Clubs for use on the navy-blue emergency blazer were approved by the executive.

The Wakari Club delegate, Mr R. Burford. complained about the lack of interest taken fay members of the club in the matter of bowling dress for Saturday and other matches. His club, he stated, had endeavoured to conform particularly to the centre’s requirements and was disappointed at the manner in which other players appeared on the greens. It was decided to write to all clubs on the matter in an endeavour to enforce the dress regulations.
