COMMANDING POSITION

ENGLISH CRICKET TEAM IN FIRST TEST SOUTH AFRICA’S LOW SCORE •' . NZPA--fcopyright ~ 'vf { Rec. 8 p.m. DURBAN, Dec. 18. England is in a commanding position for the final day on Monday of the first test against South Africa. England’s captain, George Mann, got up at dawn this morning to puzzle over the likely behaviour of the test pitch after its drenching yesterday- Any thoughts he had' of scoring, .quickly while the pitch was‘slow and easy and declaring later were rudely upset. The South African spin bowlers, Mann and Athol Rowan, made the ball turn quickly and lift. - Hutton went in Rowan’s third over, Watkins, Mann and Evans fell in quick succession to the same bowler, and Compton played a defensive innings of the highest order. England were dismissed for 253, but at stumps South Arica had lost four wickets for 90 in its’ second innings. Hutton and Washbrook, with an opening partnership of 84, gave England a good start- Washbrook was ultra-cautious, but Hutton was brilliant. Four times in one over he drove the ball through the covers to the boundary. After the last of these hits the ball had to be replaced. It struck the fence with such force that it was knocked out of shape. Scores: — England First Innings Hutton, c McCarthy, b A.
