ATTITUDE OF TRAMWAYS UNION TO CONSCRIPTION
PA WELLINGTON, Dec. 19. Exception to the action of the National Executive of the New Zealand Tramways Employees’ Union in issuing an “ instruction ” to oppose peace-time military conscription was taken to-day by Mr G. N. Amos, a member of the National Council and president of the Wellington branch. ' He said the union executive had attempted to dictate to file membership as a whole. . It had no right to instruct anybody on the issue until it received the sanction of the union. ' The council of the Wellington branch had recently decided that the trade union movement should wait until the return of the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, before considering the conscription question.
“The decision may represent the private opinions of the members of the union executive, but it is not binding on the union until the National Council chooses to make it binding—if it chooses to do so. The true position is that the National Council has not decided the queston.” he said.
