FINE IMPOSED
Assault Charge A fine of £5 on a charge of assault and £1 on a charge of drunkenness was imposed on Leonard Ronald Hill, 23 years of age; a carpenter, residing at North Beach road, at a sitting of the Oamaru Police Court, before Mr T. I. McGregor, J.P., and Mr H. C. Jeffery, J.P., on Saturday. Senior Sergeant D. Wilson stated that at 2.5 a.m. on Saturday accused entered the Red Band taxi ranks and requested Harold Frederick Brant to drive him home. Brant informed the accused that he was already engaged and had to meet the train. The accused became abusive and used obscene language to Brant, who then went to telephone the police. While doing so he was attacked by the accused, and Brant then went to the police station for assistance, and the accused was arrested.
The accused pleaded guilty to both offences, and when imposing the fines the bench commented that it looked upon this type of offence as very serious.
