AUCKLAND BANK ROBBERY
YOUNG MAN CHARGED REMANDED UNTIL THURSDAY P.A. AUCKLAND, Oct. 16. The suspect arrested after the armed hold-up and robbery of the Bank of New Zealand agency at Parnell yesterday was before the Police Court to-day. He was Edward John Patrick Phelan, aged 24, a well-built man of presentable appearance, described on the charge sheet as a company director, residing at Milford. Phelan was charged that, being armed with a .45 automatic pistol, he robbed Clark Wilson McCbrkmdale of £344, the property of the bank. By consent of defence counsel (Mr C. E. Clarke), Phelan was remanded until Thursday. Phelan’s wife said to-day that her husband enlisted in the British Army when he was 16 and took part in many big raids and operations. They came to New Zealand last year.
