NEW YORK CARGO
COMMERCIAL SHIPMENTS Steamship companies operating from New York to New Zealand have commenced to accept “ collect ” freight from New York to New Zealand for commercial shipment. Up to date, collect freight has been accepted only for Government cargo. This advice has been received by the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce from the Department of Industries and Commerce. Bills of lading are being issued with this endorsement: “ Freight payable at port of destination in United States funds, or equivalent, at current telegraphic transfer selling rate of exchange prevailing on day vessel commences unloading at port of discharge. Commercial buyers from New Zealand can now arrange to have freight prepaid in New Zealand, thus saving the setting up of dollar credits to prepay ocean freight, but in turn, it means that shipping companies In New Zealand will be billing consignees for the ocean freight based on the clause mentioned. It also means that the shipping companies in New York will no longer extend on manifests the New Zealand freight payable Inland freight will need to be paid In the United States, but ocean freight, can now be made “ freight collect.”
