STRIKE THREAT

AUCKLAND TELEPHONE OPERATORS GESTAPO METHODS ALLEGED P.A. WELLINGTON. Oct. 14. Irritated by what they call the “ Gestapo " methods of exchange monitors, toll operators on the late shift at the Chief Post Office, Auckland, threatened to walk out on Tuesday night. Only a senior official’s warning that he would call in the police, combined with the individual questioning of some men concerned, saved a strike, said a spokesman. No monitor was used on the shift. Had a strike come it would have disrupted toll services over a wide area at the busiest period of the day, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
