SEARCH REVEALS SUSPECT
BREAKING AND ENTERING CHARGE
Evidence that, in searching a Port Chalmers warehouse, he found the accused hiding under a bench was given by Constable W. G. Phillips in the City Police Court yesterday, when James Edward Ashley Perry, a labourer and cook, aged 43, faced a charge of breaking and entering the warehouse of G. H. Ferguson, Ltd., on September 28, and stealing 8s 6d in cash, and another charge of breaking and entering, with intent to commit theft, the warehouse of Milnes, Ltd., on the same date. The accused, who was not represented by counsel, pleaded guilty to both charges, and was committed by Mr J. D. Willis, S.M., to the Supreme Court at Dunedin for sentence.
In his evidence the constable said that, with another man. he went to Ferguson's warehouse at 9.55 p.m. They climbed through a broken window and searched the building. When witness found the accused, he was covered with sacks. On being pulled out, he said: “The best man got away.” Other witnesses were Patrick William Nash, a cutter employed at Ferguson’s, Robert Buchanan Milnes, manager of Milnes, Ltd., and Acting Detective K. G. Jefferies. Chief Detective Hall conducted the prosecution. Probation Granted Mary Hunter, married, aged 76. was placed on probation for two years on a charge concerning the theft of goods valued at 7s 9d, the property of Woolworths. Ltd., on October 6. A special condition of probation provided that she was not to go shopping unless accompanied by a responsible person.
