STEADY INCREASE

NEWSPAPER CIRCULATION IN DOMINION VALUE OF WRITTEN WORD P.A. WELLINGTON, Aug. 17. “It is important to note that the circulations of the daily newspapers in New Zealand have been increasing steadily during the last eight to ten years,” said Mr R. D. Horton, president of the New Zealand Newspaper Proprietors’ Association, at the opening to-day of the annual conference of advertising managers. “ This rate is higher than the proportional increase of population,” said Mr Horton, “and I think it is a matter of great importance if we are to continue to function as an informed democracy. When it comes to the.dissemination of facts the written word is still supreme.”

Discussing supplies of newsprint and the effect they were likely to have on advertising space, Mr Horton said it was hoped to have enough newsprint to continue the present size of papers. That position could change if newsprint became available either from sterling sources or local supplies. Interest was being taken in New Zealand’s own wood pulp, and its possibilities were being explored by both the Government and private interests. In the measurable future there might be seen the development of wood pulp for newsprint manufacture in New Zealand.-
