MENACE TO CHILDREN

QUARRY-FACE IN STONE STREET RATEPAYERS ALARMED Concern that the City Council had declined a request to build a substantial fence at the top of the quarry face in Stone street was expressed at a meeting of the Mornington Ratepayers’ Association. It was stated that the quarry face was alongside an empty section where children frequently played, and there was little to prevent them from falling over the 80ft cliff. The association drew the attention of the council to the Inadequate fencing, stating that it constituted a danger to children. In subsequent correspondence between the association and the City Council it was agreed to add further wires to the fence, and erect warning notices prohibiting children from playing in the area. The council said it would not be possible to build a “ child-proof ” fence, since it was almost impossible to obtain feheing materials. It was also decided at the meeting to request the City Council to seal the corner of Mitchell avenue and Elgin road, where passengers alighted from the bus, Mr M. K. Haig was appointed the association’s representative on the executive of the Otago Expansion League.
