BEEKEEPERS’ CONVENTION
OTAGO AND ’SOUTHLAND PRODUCERS The Otago and Southland Beekeepers’ Association opened its annual convention in Dunedin last night when two addresses emphasising the value of the common honey bee to the world’s agricultural and horticultural needs, and the activities of the bee. were given. The speakers were Mr I. W. Forster, apiary instructor in the Department of Agriculture at Invercargill. and Mr L. I. Box, a producer, of Heriot. The bee played an important part in a country’s economy, Mr Forster said. In America, in 1945, it was calculated that crops worth 1.300,000.000 dollars were pollinated by the honey bee. . experts had estimated that 100,000 plant species would vanish off the earth unless bees pollinated their blossoms. The convention will finish to-night.
