BATSMEN AGAIN ON TOP

Three Centuries Recorded

BRIGHT DISPLAYS IN CLUB CRICKET

Three centuries were scored in the third series of matches in the Otago Cricket Association’s senior competition which were commenced on Saturday in favourable conditions. Although the wickets were a little tricky at the beginning of the afternoon, they were generally slow and easy, and the batsmen had a field day. H. Cameron and L. Milnes, both former Plunket Shield players, compiled 116 and 110 respectively for Carisbrook against Albion-Y.M.C.A., and I. J. Botting, the well-known Rugby player, put together a well-made 110 not out, for University against Dunedin. In the latter match R. T. Hunt scored 79 for University, and A. W. Roberts, the High School Old Boys’ captain, who made 181, not out, on the previous Saturday failed by only five runs to reach the century against Grange. The best bowling figures were obtained by I. Walsh who took four wickets for 21 runs for NorthEast Valley against Kaikorai, and J. Ferguson (Kaikorai) secured five for 51 in the same match. Two teams, Carisbrook and Old Boys, made scores of over 300, and University declared with six down for 280 against Dunedin. In a Second Grade A match on the North Ground M. O’Brien scored 107 for Grange against Kaikorai.

OLD BOYS’ TALL SCORE

A. W. ROBERTS IN FORM A splendid partnership by their captain, A. W. Roberts, and the young lefthander. J. McConnachie. who added 99 runs in 75 minutes for the sixth wicket, paved the way for the large total of 347 scored by High School Old Boys in the match against Cfrange at the North Ground. All but one of the Old Boys batsmen reached double figures, but, with the wicket a little tricky at the start the first four wickets fell for 76 runs. Roberts and McConnachie got on top of the bowling, however, and the former played a first-class innings for 95. which included 14 4’s and two 6’s. His only chance was a difficult one to long-on when he was 78, off the bowling of G. Lemin. McConnachie hit seven 4’s in scoring 44. Subsequently, two other colts, C. Graham and W. Gough, batted most attractively to put on 82 runs in 44 minutes for the fourth wicket. Gough’s 53 included seven 4’s and a 6. and Graham hit five 4’s in making 37. The Grange attack'was never particularly vicious, and although T. A. Freeman secured five wickets for 96 runs his bowling was somewhat erratic. Grange batted for five minutes and scored two runs without loss. Scores : Old Boys First Innings G. H. Mills, c Elmes, b Lemin .. .. 18 V. J. Leader, st Stephenson, !b Elmes 18 D. CENTURY TO BOTTING

UNIVERSITY’S GOOD START

University had placed itself in a sound position in its match against Dunedin at Tonga Park when it declared with the score at 280 for the loss of six wickets. A century by I. J. Botting was well served after a stolid display, and his partnership with R. T. Hunt was the greatest factor in the compiling of the students’ comfortable total. Botting’s 110 * included 16 4’s, while Hunt his five 4’s v and a 6 in the course of an attractive 79. The Dunedin attack was generally not well sustained, and there were lapses in fielding. 1 The young fast-medium bowler, S. T. Jones, was hard-worked, bowling 26 overs at a cost of 71 runs and securing four wickets. University declared at 5.30, and at stumps the opening Dunedin batsmen had made 16 runs.
