BOXING

ELLUL AND CRUICKSHANK Vince Ellul of Queensland, is a popular boxer. He has had 46 fights, losing five, drawing one and winning the other 40. He recently defeated Harry Roe, ex-light-weight champion, and defeated “Tiger” Donnelly, whom the British Empire light-weight champion, Ronnie James, said was the best prospect seen in Australia. Recently, in Mackay, Queensland, a professional bout was to be cancelled, but Ellul was discovered among the spectators, and he agreed to substitute, going into the ring in bare feet to win a clearcut decision. Ellul intends to spend some months in New Zealand seeking contests. The New Zealand welter-weight champion lan Cruickshank, has already suffered a loss on points at the hands of Ellul In their first contest Cruickshank was unfortunate to suffer a cut eye In the sixth round and had to fight a defensive fight from then on. This defensive boxing is new to Cruickshank, and possibly accounted for his defeat. Both Cruickshank and his trainer, Archie Leckie, are confident of reversing the decision in the Town Hall next Monday.
