CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 1. The sky was overcast prior to the opening of the New Zealand Cup meeting at Addington to-day, but later the sun broke through and the racing was held in extremely pleasant conditions before one of the' largest attendances ever seen on the course. The track was in splendid order.

The bracket of Highland Fling and Nyallo Scott was backed down to a little over evens on the win machine and returned a very cramped price on the place machine. Taking the lead after four furlongs had been covered, Highland Fling called the tune from that stage and was always travelling like a winner. He could have improved on the time he recorded if necessary. No excuses could be made for the others. Betty Maxegin trotted faultlessly all the way to win the Avon Handicap and proved herself one of the best straight-out trotters in commission. She should play a prominent part in the trotting free-for-alls. The sum of £197,003 went through the totalisator, compared with £193,544 last year.
