RETRACTION SOUGHT

USE OF WORD “SADISTIC’

INCIDENT IN HOUSE Parliamentary Reporter WELLINGTON, Oct. 31. A retraction of the word “ sadistic ” was requested by the Chairman of Committees, Mr C. L. Carr, in the House of Representatives to-day when Mr R. M. Algie (Oppn., Remuera) said that the Minister of Labour, Mr McLagan, seemed to take a sadistic pleasure in using a verbal bayonet against any employers who came near enough. Mr Algie claimed that the word was a good English one. When he did not withdraw, the chairman threatened to name him. Mr T. C. Webb (Oppn., Rodney* suggested the best course might be to summon Mr Speaker for a ruling. Mr Algie substituted “ cruel ’’ for sadistic, but the chairman objected that this was trifling with the chair. Mr Algie withdrew the terms, and ended his speech by reference to the “ kind-hearted and harmonious nature ’’ of the Minister.
