INJURY TO BRUCE CAUSES TRAINER SOME WORRY
Special to the Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 31. After fine weather yesterday afternoon, there was another break this morning, showers of rain falling during the afterbreakfast work at Riccarton. The rain was accompanied by a cold south-west wind. A. McKay has arrived with the three-year-old filly. Excellency. She is none the worse for her race in the Desert Gold Stakes at Trentham, and she will now be got ready for Riccarton engagements. She is booked to run in the Derby and Oaks, while she has been nominated for the Stonyhurst Handicap on the third day. Bruce has become a source of some worry to L. J. Ellis. He wrenched a joint’ at Trentham, probably while running in the Harcourt Stakes. He is on the easy list at. present and his trainer will not know the extent of the trouble for a few days. Owing to an accident, Coral Arc was unable to race at Trentham. He got one of his legs over a rail while playing in his paddock and had to be eased up. His Riccarton programme will also be interefered with. This is bad luck for his connections, as J. C. Tomkinson had him in great order when he went north. Pimlico, a four-year-old gelding by Lang Bian, was brought back by J. C. Tomkinson when he came home from Trentham, and he will remain with the Riccarton trainers for the New Zealand Cup meeting. His second to Banshee at Trentham, over a mile and three furlongs. suggests that he will be hard to beat in distance hack races at Riccarton.
