PORT CHALMERS
CENTENNIAL COMMITTEE The meeting of the Port Chalmers Centennial Committee in the Council Chambers on Tuesday night was presided over by Mr H. S. Watson, there being a fair attendance of members. Mr A. C. Notman, reporting for the Reenactment Committee, said that contact had been made with the Maori people, some of whom were descendants of the Maoris who welcomed the settlers, and they had agreed to take part in the re-enactment of the landing. The script had been written and was being checked over, and the casting of the players arranged. An endeavour had been made to spread the interest among as many families as possible and some of the players would be actual descendants of the settlers who came in the first two shins. A ship also had been arranged for. Mr J. Bain outlined a scheme for rigging the ship as a barque for the occasion. He had made inquiries for the lifeboats of the sort needed for landing the sengers. Messrs J. Bain, C. Knewstubb. Captain J. Black, and J. Morgan, sen., were appointed a committee to carry out the arrangements. Mr Bain to be convener. , A , . Mr H. S. Watson was appointed to meet the Provincial Centennial Council to inform it of Port Chalmers arrangements. A Publicity Committee consisting of Messrs H. S. Watson, A. C. Notman, and the Rev. H. O. Bowman, was formed to consider publication of a leaflet that would give information regarding the reenactment of the landing. Mr J. Bain recommended to the Finance Committee that a local appeal be made for funds for the Centennial celebrations.
