NOTES ON THE RUNNING

WAKARI HURDLES Courtdress and Tamerlane were last to leave and Moneybird went out fasi to lead past the stand from First Out, Powys, San Quentin, Sir Saladin and Foreign Ways. Courtdress was last. Across the top Moneybird was 10 lengths clear, but he hooked the hurdle at the seven-furlong mark badly and dropped back to fourth. Running down the back San Quentin showed the way to Foreign Ways, First Out, Moneybird and Sir Saladin. There was little change across the bottom bend and First Out and Foreign Ways led into the straight, followed by San Quentin, Moneybird and Sir Saladin. Foreign Ways hit the front and went on to win from Sir Saladin, with First Out third, ahead of San Quentin. They were followed by Courtdress, Moneybird and Kosciusko. Powys finished last, a long way back. Half a mile from home there was no change in the running, but turning for home Boolamskee slid through on the rails to lead Hansel, Joygiver, Brockie, Eriskay and Lord Dundonald into the straight. Halfway down the running Boolamskee looked like winning, but Lord Dundonald just caught him on the post to split winning honours. Below the distance Excellency and Kartikeya were well clear, and they came on stride for stride up to about half a furlong from home, where Kartikeya got his nose in front and went on to win by two lengths, with a big stretch of daylight back to Coral Arc. Beaugard was fourth and Sally Gazelle fifth. After the race, the president of the club Mr L. C. Hazlett, presented the cup to Mr E. E. Steele, the owner of Kartikeya.
