CRIME AND PUNISHMENT
Sir,—l notice that at a sitting of the Mosgiel Court last week the magistrate fined a number of persons £3 and costs (10s) for being in possession of liquor in the vicinity of a dance hall. In Dunedin, the fine to-day is' £7 and costs, and the magistrate who imposed this fine has stated that he intends “ stepping up the penalties in these eases." What I would like to know is whether the offence in the country is less serious than if it occurs in Dunedin. —I am, etc., Curious. June 3.
