EMBEZZLEMENT CHARGE

FORMER COLONEL ARRESTED SAN FRANCISCO. Rec. 9.30 p.m. May 26. William Evans, a former lieutenant colonel with the Military Government in Japan, and now president of a lumber milling company, was arrested to-day on charges of embezzling 100,000 dollars in gold from the Japanese on Formosa. i The Federal Bureau of Investigation alleges that Evans, as a member of the advance party which took over control of Formosa after the war, accepted the surrender of 120 kilograms of gold in coin and bullion. He handed over four of eight boxes of gold to the Chinese military authorities and converted the remaining gold in Shanghai into American currency, which he brought back to America. Suspicion of Evans was aroused by large cash payments he made on behalf of his firm.
