HEAVY DAMAGES

CLAIM AGAINST AMERICA JAPANESE RED CROSS VESSEL SUNK Rec. 9 p.m. TOKIO, May 26. The Japanese Foreign Office hied a claim with the United States Government to-day for 45,000,000 dollars and replacement of the Red Cross supply ship Awamaru, sunk by an American submarine on April 1, 1945, in violation of a safe conduct agreement. At American insistence, the Awamaru carried Red Cross supplies to Allied prisoners in South-East Asia, with a round trip guaranteed. En route home with 2003 passengers on board, it was sunk by a submarine which picked up one survivor. The United States, answering a Japanese protest on June 29, 1945, said indemnity would be discussed after the war.
