NEW STUDIO

STATION 4YA TENDERS NOW CALLED MODERN RECORDING EQUIPMENT Tenders will close on June 12 for the work of erecting a new broadcasting studio in Dunedin at the Burns Hall. It is exDected that the studio, which will supplement the present equipment of Station 4YA, will be completed within a few months of the signing of the contract. Officials of the station interviewed yesterday by the Daily Times said that the "recording equipment to be installed in the new building would be the most modem available. More Space Needed The necessity for additional space for 4YA has arisen from the four-fold increase in staff as a result of which ihe office and library space has encroached on that of the studios proper. The formation of a study group and other orchestral expansion have also made necessary the provision of further accommodation. The new facilities will be situated in the present gymnasium and Sunday school room of the Burns Hall. The accommodation will comprise the main studio of about 44ft by 22ft, a smaller studio for recording talks, a control room, housing the recording equipment, a small lounge for waiting performers, and an office. The entrance to the studio will be from Burlington street, and a certain amount of adaptation of the building is likely to be required to exclude street noises, such as the provision of sound-proof shutters. Fluorescent lighting of a modem type will be installed at the studio, which will be lined with wallboard and will have the celling equipped with acoustic tiles. Raised Staging.

A new feature for a broadcasting studio in Dunedin will be the erection of a raised staging to provide the performers with radio theatre conditions. The main studio will be adequate for local requirements, and should hold 20 players and their instruments comfortably.

Arrangements have also been made by the station officials to obtain the use of the main hall of the building when space is required for larger groups, such as rehearsals of the symphony orchestra. Broadcasts from the new studio will be linked directly to the transmitter at Highcliff or may be sent by way of the existing studios at 4YA.
