Favourites for Chief Event

ARABIAN NIGHT AND GENIALITY The feature event on the card for the first day of the Wingatui winter meeting on Saturday will be the Otago Steeplechase and 14 horses have been handicapped for the race, which will be run over a distance of about 2 h miles. From a preliminary survey of the figures the impression is gathered that Geniality and Arabian Night should be two of the hardest horses to beat. At the Southland meeting last month Geniality 9.10, won the Clifden Steeples, of 2\ miles from Irish Wit 9.11 and Arabian Night 11.2, the winning margin being 100 yards, with Arabian Night about 70 yards further away. In the Otago Steeples Arabian Night has 11.0, Geniality 10.8„ and Irish Wit 10.0, which means Arabian Night meets Geniality on 141 b better terms and Irish Wit on 51b better terms. Filibeg, who finished fourth in the Clifden Steeples, has been dropped 41b and Tamerlane, who fell when lying second, 31b. Arabian Night has come on a good deal since the Southland meeting and on paper he and Geniality look the most likely to dispute favouritism.
