GOVERNMENT ALARM
’ DECLINE IN BIRTH RATE
GRANTING OF ALLOWANCES SUGGESTED
Rec. 11.30 p.m. CANBERRA, May 26. Alarmed at the declining birth rate, the Commonwealth Government is considering the granting of allowances to young couples. The Minister for Health and Social Services, Senator F. J. McKenna, said to-day that the Government had been studying the successful results obtained from the granting of such allowances in Germany. He could not indicate what form the allowances would take or how large they Would be. Only three countries, Russia, Germany and the Argentine, had given allowances to young married couples. Renewed efforts . will be made to make operative the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Social Security, which has not functioned since the last Parliament. The Opposition representatives have yet to be selected. The Minister for Immigration, Mr A. A. Calwell, stated recently that Australia was “ bleeding to death.” and that if the population decline continued, there would be no Australia in 50 years.
