NEW LOCOMOTIVES

HILLSIDE RAILWAY WORKSHOPS SATISFACTORY PERFORMANCE Good progress is being made at the Hillside railway workshops with the programme to build 35 Ja class locomotives. Four have already been completed and they are giving a highly satisfactory performance in the Otago and Southland districts. Another of these locomotives will be going out of the workshops this week. The roller bearings on the driving rods of the last Ja locomotive to leave the shops have given every satisfaction. Another big programme being handled at Hillside at present is the conversion of a number of WAB sidetank engines to the more useful type of tender locomotives of the Ab class. The conversion of the first engine is nearing completion and work on the others will be started at intervals.
