COST TO COUNCIL
TRAMWAYMEN’S CLAIMS EFFECTS OF DOMINION AWARD Details are given in the report of the Transport Committee to be submitted to the meeting of the City Council on Monday of the claims of the New Zealand Tramway Authorities Employees’ Industrial Union of Workers for a new award for the Dominion. The union is seeking a wage increase of from 3.691 d per hour for conductors to 6.2 d per hour for equipment examiners, and a shift allowance of 3s per shift for all work outside the period, 7.45 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. The cost of giving effect to these proposals would amount to £27,987. In addition, claims are submitted for payment during the meal relief, time-and-a-half for Saturday, long service leave, sick pay, etc., and the cost of meeting these demands would mean another £26,969, or a total of £54,866 per annum. The matter will be discussed with the unions representatives at a meeting in Wellington on April 9 next, The Transport engineer-manager will represent the council at this conference.
