SCHOOL HOLIDAYS
CHANGE NOT FAVOURED EDUCATION BOARD’S VIEW “It would be a big thing for the Board to tackle,” commented the chairman of the Otago Education Board, J. I. Fraser, at the meeting yesterday when the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce forwarded for the Board’s consideration a suggestion made by Mr C. E.. Begg that New Zealand’s annual holiday period be changed from December to mid-January, or preferably the end of January. Mr Begg’s proposal stated that if schools were closed, say, from the end of January until midMarch he thought business firms would find it an easy matter to arrange holidays for their staffs at any period of a fortnight within this school closing period. Another advantage would be that, on the average, better weather would be enjoyed and that parents and children would have a much better chance of enjoying the sunshine and fresh air. It was decided to take no action. Shower Rooms Sought
As a test case, it was decided that application be made by the Board to the Education Department for a grant to cover the cost of hot and cold shower rooms at the Mosgiel District High School. An application for the shower rooms was made by the school committee.
It was stated by the committee that an ample supply of hot water was available and that the shpwers would be appreciated after sports events and also for the agricultural class. Baths at Mussel Bay
The mayor of Port Chalmers, Mr H. S. Watson, wrote stating that it was proposed to construct swimming baths at Mussel Bay on a site adjacent to the school. The baths would include h paddling and learners’ pool, and he suggested that a subsidy be granted by the board. It was stated that if a subsidy were granted it would preclude the possibility of the school committee getting a similar subsidy for a learners’ pool at the school itself. On this point, the board decided to await a reply • from the committee.
' In addition to the chairman, the meeting was attended by the Mayor, Mr Cameron, and Messrs W. Jacobsen, J. V. Riach, N. H. Colquhuon, W. M. Cooper, H. A. Brough, and G. S. Fincham. *
