MANY DISABILITIES

AMERICAN ARMY OFFICERS (Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON. Jan. 7. More than 50 per cent, of all general officers who have been discharged from the army since January 1, 1941, have been retired for physical disability. This is about the same percentage as the navy’s rate which inspired charges last week by the House Naval Affairs Committee that the navy was guilty of abuses in granting disability retirement to high-ranking regular officers. Forty-three per cent, of 365 army officers of general rank whose average age was 56 were suffering from ailments of the heart and arteries, 34 oer cent, had arthritis, and 12 per ceqt. deafness. Some generals had as many as six different ailments each.
