FLIGHT TO AMERICA
BOY WITH SCREW IN LUNG OPERATION IN PHILADELPHIA PHILADELPHIA, (Rec. 8.45 p.m.) Jan. 5. The four-year-old John Turner, of Christchurch, has completed a 10,000mile flight to Temple Hospital for an operation to remove a screw from his lung. The hospital authorities said the boy will be kept under observation before the operation is performed by Dr Chevalier Jackson some time this week. The boy apparently suffered no ill-effects from his trip. The funds for the operation and the flight to Philadelphia were advanced by the Red Cross. The plane in which the boy covered the last stage of the flight landed in a sleet storm. The groundman had advised the pilot, in view of the bad weather, to fly on to New York, but the pilot replied: “ I will take a chance. This youngster needs it.”
