NOTES FROM RICCARTON
BATTLE CHIEF SCHOOLED (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan 6. A grass track was open at Riccarton this morning for the benefit of horses doing fast work before going to Trentham. Golden Souvenir, Bruce, Al-Sirat, Royal Tan and Rahine were among those who got through useful tasks. Battle Chief gave a very good display in a school over six hurdles. He Is in great order, and in view of his recent form he is expected to race well at Trentham. . „ , , About a dozen horses from Riccarton are acceptors fdr the Reefton meeting on Saturday. , , . . L J Ellis will leave to-night on his way to Trentham with two horses. Only Bruce will race on Saturday. He has two engagements and his programme has not been settled, though his trainer is inclined to favour the Dominion Handicap, one mile and three furlongs, rather than the York Handicap, seven furlongs. Golden Souvenir will be on hand for engagements later in the meeting, starting with the Wellington Cup, on the second day. The present intention is to run both horses in the Wellington Cup, in which case Ellis may not be able to ride either of th ß m Wilson will take three of this team to Trentham, leaving to-morrow night. Al-Sirat and Renowned will race on Saturday, but Bridge Acre will be reserved for the third and fourth days. Renowned has done nothing of note yet, but the other two are in their best form. F D Jones decided to miss the first day of the Wellington meeting, but he has arranged to leave for Trentham next week with Leigh Barton, Montezuma, Palm Bearer and Zorro, who will race on the d three-year-old filly Battle Area has had a change of stables, having been purchased by R. Register She has had a few races this season, while trained by C Emerson, without showing any form, but she may improve with age.
