SUPPORT FOR LEADERS
RANK AND FILE OF UNION PRESENT POLICY AFFIRMED In a statement last night the national president of the New Zealand Transport Workers’ Federation, Mr W. B. Richards, who attended a special meeting in Wellington, said that the Transport Workers’ Federation was hopeful that. an amicable settlement would be reached. The executive of the Transport Workers’ Federation, he added, was not unsympathetic, to, the case of the Waterside Workers’ Union. Mr Richards also attended a special stop-work meeting of the Wellington branch of the Watersiders’ Union, at which there were 1100 members present. He said that a progress report had been given by the branch secretary, and it was unanimously resolved to instruct their national executive to continue with the present policy of the 40-hour week until its demands were met. Mr Richards added that the meeting had been most enthusiastic, and that there was no suggestion of the rank and file not supporting their leaders.
