HUGE CROWDS IN SYDNEY

SYDNEY, Jan. 1. The New Year celebrations in Sydney were the liveliest since before the war. Hundreds of thousands of people celebrated at midnight The densest crowd was at King’s Cross, where about 60,000 revellers took control of the streets and footpaths. The police were compelled to stop all vehicular traffic into King’s Cross. Shortly after 9.30 p.m. many people went to the beaches, the greatest crowds being 40,000 at Manly, 35,000 at Bondi, and 20,000 at Maroubra. By midnight firemen had answered 20 calls to extinguish bonfires which had got out of control.
