LAND SETTLEMENT

ACCOMMODATION SHORTAGE PART HOUSES ADVOCATED (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 3. The construction of part houses on land settlement blocks to meet the immediate needs of ex-servicemen wishing to settle on the land was urged by Mr A. S. Sutherland (Oppn., Hauraki) and Mr E.. B. Corbett (Oppn. Egmont) during consideration of the vote for land settlement in the House of Representatives to-night. Mr Sutherland said that ex-service-men were unable to take up land, because of lack of housing. Part houses could be finished when the situation eased and men and materials were available. The Minister of Lands, Mr Skinner said that the part house would work only on blocks where there were 30 or 40 men. Plans for part houses had been prepared for some time. The part house might be all right where a contractor could be obtained, but the department found that once a contractor was obtained to go into the country and ao a job the best course to adopt was to keep him there until the job was finished. Mr Corbett said that while the Minister pursued such a policy he would not have land settlement. The Minister had himself to blame for his lack of understanding of one of the fundamentals in land settlement.
