SATURDAY CLOSING
SHOPS IN AUSTRALIA SYDNEY, Oct. 2. An application by the Shop Assistants’ Union for Saturday morning clos ing in Sydney and Newcastle was refused by Mr Justice Webb, of the Industrial Commission, to-day. He also refused an alternative claim that shops in the Sydney metropolitan area should close at 5 p.m. on week days and 11.30 a.m. on Saturdays. . The judge said that in a previous case the Full Court had stated that it must consider public requirements and the effect of a change on ancilliary industries, Information revealed that shop assistants were performing a necessary service on Saturday mornings.
