GIRL GUIDES’ ASSOCIATION
ANNUAL MEETING The Mayor Mr J. C. Kirkness, was in the chair at the annual meeting of the North Otago Girl Guides’ Association, held in the Borougli Council chambers yesterday afternoon. Presenting the annual report, the district commissioner. Miss J. B r Wilson, said there were two local associations, seven companies, two Brownie packs, 13 Guiders, 160 Guides, 39 Brownies, and 33 recruits. During the year the active companies were To Puke, Kia Toa, Waitaki, Kurow, Weston, Teaneraki, Waikouaiti, and Kaiawhina and Palmerston Brownie packs. Guiders had continued to give loyal and devoted service. Unfortunately, it was still difficult to find the number of Guiders required for an extension of the work. They all looked forward to the time when a North Otago Guide camp would be organised for Guides of all companies. They were grateful to the managers of St. Paul's Church and the vestry of St. Luke's Church, also Messrs J. Bulleid and Co. and the Waitaki High Schools Board for the use of halls for meetings. The need for a suitable building for Guide activities had been emphasised each year, and during the past year the association had been greatly encouraged by the interest and practical assistance of many friends, who recognised the value of a youth movement which gave training in good citizenship. North Otago had oversubscribed its quota for funds to equip Guide teams for relief work in Greece and Malaya. The Mayor congratulated the association on its excellent report and expressed the wish that its activities would be extended to country areas, as well as in the town. It was unfortunate that country companies were short of leaders. Referring to the Guide rooms, Mr Kirkness expressed the opinion that the memorial scheme proposed by the Minister of Health, Mr Nordmeyer, was particulail.v sound, and if a broad principle was carried out the Girl Guides should make application for accommodation for training and headquarters. The annual report and balance sheet, which showed a credit balance of £SB 3s 8d (general), £77 3s 6d (building), were adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs A. E. C. McDouall; vice-presidents, Mesdames D. L. Patterson and Ward Thomson; committee—Mesdames J. Meikle, G. W. Kemp, W. I. C. Steenson, H. J. Robertson, H. R. Domigan, C. M. Rickman. S. J. Cooper, J. I. McEwan. M Mirfin, G. L. Austin, W. M. Uttlcy, A. Robertson, A. C. Restieaux, Misses Betty Kirkness, and J. W. Gibson; secretary, Mrs W. J. Davies; badge secretary. Mrs W. Atkinson; divisional treasurer, Mrs M. Mirfin; honorary auditor, Mr W. J. Davies. In her remarks Mrs McDouall made an appeal to mothers who .had girls in the Guides at the present time to accept executive positions and so create more interest, not only for themselves but for the girls The Mayor's remarks regarding rooms had given the executive great hopes, and they would continue to work for more funds. Votes of thanks were extended to the commissioner, officers,' and executive Guiders. arc to the Mayor, for presiding.
