RED CROSS AND ST. JOHN
MEETING OF JOINT COUNCIL A meeting of the Otago Committee of the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and New Zealand Red Cross Society was attended by Mr A. McHutchon (deputy chairman), Sir Lindo Ferguson, Mrs A. A. Fairbaim, Messrs O. L. Ferens, N. Haggitt, and H. L. Paterson. The deputy chairman welcomed Mr H. L. Paterson, who has replaced Mr T. Somerville as St. John representative on the committee, It was reported that the general secretary, Mr J. Nixonwestwood, who had visited Montecillo Home, had expressed satisfaction with the building alterations and with the management. He was particularly impressed with the occupational therapy work done by the servicemen patients. The deputy chairman said that a billiard table had been provided for servicemen, patients at Waipiata Sanatorium. The annual request for comforts' for servicemen patients in Queen Mary Hospital. Hanmer, was received from the Canterbury secretary of the Joint Council, and it was decided that these would bo despatched in November. The Montecillo Home report showed a satisfactory state of affairs at the home. It stated that it was proposed to hold the annual garden fete on or about November 30. Arrangements had been left in the hands of the ladies of the committee. Mr J. W. Smeaton had been re-elected chairman. Members expressed their appreciation of his work on behalf of Montecillo.
