REPORTS OF COMMITTEES WORK TO BE UNDERTAKEN The report of the Works Committee of the City Council, which will be presented to the meeting of the council on Monday night, states that the city engineer has been instructed to act in the following matters: Completion of kerb and channel and footway paving in English avenue, west side, Elgin road to Maryhill terrace. Construction of kerb and channel and paved footways on both sides of Bayfield road. Estimate £IOBS. Carriageway formation at Alexandra street. Estimate £2OO. . (These works are provided for in the loan schedule.) , . The erection of a new’ street light at the corner of Lockerbie street and Middleton road and the moving of an existing light at the corner of Lockerbie street and Marew’a street. The remodelling of steps in Wright street, at an estimated cost of £BO. The laying of four chains of K. and G. in Ann street, at a cost of £BO. Temporary Hospital Building The Works Committee will report that the Otago Hospital Board has been granted permission to construct a temporary operating theatre and a temporary corridor to the Victoria Pavilion for use during the period required for the construction of the new theatre block facing Frederick street. In the circumstances, the report states, it is considered reasonable to approve of wooden construction for these temporary buildings on the understanding that they are removed as soon as the new block has been completed. Unused Petrol Pumps The Works Committee has decided that petrol pumps on the street which are- sealed and not in use should be charged half the normal permit fee, which is £lO a year. No fee was charged on these pumps during the war years when the tanks to which they are connected were used by the Government for petrol storage, but it is now considered, in view of the liability which remains with the council, if an accident should occur in connection with them, that it is reasonable to charge half fee. There are 33 pumps installed on thre streets, of which 18 are in use and 15 are sealed off. Electrical Supplies With a view to having the necessary information available as soon as the Loans Board has approved of the department’s loan proposals, the Electricity Committee has granted authority to' call tenders for equipment for the Halfway Bush, Ward street, and Neville street sub-stations. Sarrlples of Milk The report of the chief sanitary inspector states that 138 samples of milk and two of cream were taken during August. Of the 123 samples submitted to the chemical test, 53 failed to comply with the regulations, 19 being deficient in milk fat, and 6 containing added water ranging from 13 per cent, to 27 per cent. Of the 9 samples of pasteurised milk submitted to the phosphate test, 2 failedito comply with the standard. The report states that steps were being taken ta improve conditions where samples had failed to comply with regulations. Motor Testing At the motor vehicle testing station, 877 warrants of fitness were issued during August, compared with 826 for the same period last year. Of these, 298 were rejected on first inspection.
