SWIMMING TOURS

VISIT OF INDIAN TEAM OTAGO CENTRE SUPPORTS PROPOSAL A proposal for a tour of New Zealand by a team of Indian swimmers and water polo players in February, 1947, came before a meeting of the Otago Swimming Centre last night in a letter from the New Zealand Council. The president, Mr D. F. Watson occupied the chair. The council advised that a letter had been received from the National Swimming Association of India, agreeing to the tour and offering to visit countries on the way from India, with a view to assisting in the financing of the tour. The Indian authorities also stated that generous contributions towards the travelling fund were being encouraged. On the motion of Mr S. Brown, it was decided to advise the New Zealand Council that subject to the terms being satisfactory, Otago would be glad to take part in any tour arranged. It was also resolved to suggest that in the event of the Indian team not visiting New Zealand, efforts be made to arrange for a tour by an Australian swimming and water polo team. . It was also mentioned that the Kiwi Club was at present negotiating with the New South Wales women’s swimming authorities with a view to Miss Ngalre Lane being sent to Sydney in January and the arranging of a tour by an Australian women’s team later in the season. Educational Work The educational officer. Mr D. C. Bannatyne, submitted returns of school children’s distance certificates Issued during the past year as follows:—10 yards, 595: beginners, 484; learners, 791; proficiency 362; merit, 178; primary life saving, 36; — total 2449. The chairman said that, having regard to the infantile paralysis restrictions, the results were satisfactory although they showed a drop on the previous year’s returns. Mr Bannantyne was accorded a vote of thanks for his work. Water Polo It was decided to recommend to the annual meeting of the centre next week that the water polo competitions should be commenced on November 5. A motion was carried that members of the University Club should be granted a dispensation to enable them to play * water polo for any other club during the University vacation, subject to their names being forwarded to the Water Polo Match Committee. Mr Watson Intimated that the New Zealand • Water Polo Board was giving consideration to the institution of a NorthSouth Island water polo match. Transfers. The following transfers were granted, subject to clearances being In order; — D. Doake, from Murihiku (Invercargill) to Kiwi; E. Bell, Spreydon (Christchurch) to Kiwi; and A. Knight, Fitzroy (New Plymouth) to Kiwi. General The Kiwi Club was granted permission to hold a carnival at Dunedin on October 17, 18,' 19 and 21, and to present it in Christchurch, in conjunction with the Spreydon Club, on October 26 and 28. The secretary of the Police Amateur Swimming Club (Mr G. E. S. Kelly) wrote cancelling the club’s affiliation owing to the transfer of some of its members and the difficulty in arranging for members of the swimming team to be present at the baths when required owing to the nature of their duties.—Noted. The secretary reported that club returns of membership had been received as follows:—Kiwi 235. Zenith 126, Dunedin 76, Oamaru 53, Taieri 47, Kalkorai 40, Roxburgh 31, St. Kilda 20, University 10.Eight clubs had failed to make returns, and unless they were received before the annual meeting these clubs might be deprived of their votes.
