QUICK PASSAGE
CUSTOMS ACTS AMENDMENT BILL (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Oct. 2. After an explanation of the measure by the Minister of Customs, Mr IJash, the Customs Acts Amendment Bill was accorded a quick passage by the House of Representatives to-night. Mr Nash explained that the reason for the reduction in gold duty was to enable quartz mines to work less payable ore. In the case of the Waihi mine, it was expected to extend the life of the mine from two years to 10 or more years. Mr K. J. Holyoake (Oppn.. Pahiatua) said that the same principle applied to millions of acres of marginal land. Mr Nash said that there would not be argument on the Government side of the' House against any measures that w’ould bring marginal land into production. Referring to the schedule of sales tax exemptions, Mr W. J. Poison (Oppn,. Stratford) said the public would still be dissatisfied that the Government had not risen to the opportunity to remove completely a form of taxation which it had for years condemned. If the Government had been true to its principles it would have done away with the sales tax long ago. The Bill was put through all stages and passed.
