MORE STOPPAGES

AUSTRALIAN MINES SIXTEEN IDLE YESTERDAY (Rec. 10 p.m.) SYDNEY. July 9. More than 11,000 tons of coal were lost to-day by stoppages at 16 New South Wales mines, swelling the loss for the first two days of the week to 28,000 tons. All the southern mines resumed except Corrimal. ■ While the Queensland coal strike continued, miners’ claims for extra annual leave and sick leave would not be dealt with, said the Central Coal Authority, Mr A. C. Willis. The Queensland Mine Owners’ Association stated that the miners had gone on strike in sympathy with the meat workers, whose strike. had been ruled illegal. “If we stand for arbitration we must support it,’’ declared Mr Willis. “It is mo use doubling or trebling wages if production continues to fall. You cannot take more out of the common pool of production than you put into it. With higher wages and decreased production you can only get inflation and misery.”
